Dear Wooly!
Sometimes you have to strike when the mood hits. This may be a disaster, but I am going to try it for awhile. Here's my idea  - an advice column for spinners. A Dear Abby of fiber, so to speak. So, let's give this thing a whirl (or a whorl, or whatever!). Notice the Dear Wooly link above or to the right above the dancing sheep, which will link you to the Dear Wooly! site. There is a link to contact me, or you can leave a question on the message board of this blog. Questions, I want questions!! Spinning related ones, please. I will be building and tinking the site over the next few days - a new learning curve for me.

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly
02.27.05 (3:38 pm) [edit]
Obviously, at this time, since none of my pictures are showing, Photobucket must be down, so I refuse to feel guilty for not uploading the St. Augustine pictures at this moment. Anyhow, I need some time to decompress.
As always, I had a ball visiting with Elayne. Nothing can change that. That's most obviously the GOOD. There is nothing to replace spending time with a great friend.
Now, for the bad. This was a little quirky weekend. Well, it rained or drizzled all weekend, and we were disappointed that our good friend Kathy was unable to come to Elayne's or to the Spin In. On Saturday, it was nice that we actually got to spin inside a house, since it was rainy and cool. The exhibits in the building were simply stunning, all products made by the St. Augustine Textile Arts Guild. Felted necklaces and earrings were my favorite. Now, I simply MUST try to make some of the earrings. We found out, though, that the Menendez Birthday Celebration was not happening. Apparently, the organizer is sick, and no one picked up the torch. It is sad to hear that this magnificent event is no longer occurring, but I am very thankful I got to see it once, anyhow.
Then, the ugly. Elayne had decided it would be fun for us to overdye some wool yarn she had. We did a marvelous job of it, too! The yarn looked like falling autumn leaves. Yummy, yummy stuff, us being the artists that we are  Well, we steamed the stuff and let it cool. So far, so good. Then when Elayne went to rinse: poof - all of the dye rinsed right off. Must have been something the wool was treated with. We were both sick about it, but managed to maintain our good humor.

Dress, spinning wheel, fiber (llama + Falkland blend), books, goodies, etc. are already in the car. I am looking forward to my fiberly weekend with Elayne. If any of you happen to be in St. Augustine on Saturday, stop by The Rose House in Old St. Augustine Village to see us in full costume spinning. I can hardly wait!

Playing Dress Up
02.20.05 (12:27 pm) [edit]
I can't wait until Saturday when I get to wear this:

I tried it on today, and it was so much fun. Renee did a fabulous job with this outfit, I think.
Here are some details of the skirt and apron:

And the overdress (or whatever it's called):

Alas, you must be patient before I post a picture of myself in the costume. That would be telling... But I promise after the festival to give you a peek.

Odds and Ends
02.19.05 (3:35 pm) [edit]
Okay, you are thinking this is odd. I am really nuts to cover a fast food drink cup with knitted handspun.

The reason for my aberrant behavior is that I have been using the cup lined with a plastic baggy to throw bits of trash in (VM, clumps, etc.) while spinning. I finally just got tired of looking at the logo on the cup, so this is what I devised. I have an embellished trash cup - imagine that! It looks all lumpy and bumpy in the picture, but is actually pretty cute in person.
Next, I made a trip today to The Classy Needle in Fernandina Beach and bought 2 skeins each of this yarn. Both pair of socks will be for gifts. The bright ones will be for Phillip's girlfriend, Jessie, since she is really appreciating her handknitted items she got for Christmas. The others will be a gift to my friend, Renee, since she is loaning me her period costume for next weekend. This will be the weekend I go spend with Elayne. We will be participating with the spinners again at the Pedro Menendez Birthday Festival in St. Augustine. Hopefully, we wil be warmer this year - we have a house we can go in this year! But I have my fingerless gloves ready, just in case.

Last but not least are my recently (about 2 hr. ago) finished socks. You may remember these are the ones I started as 2 socks on one circular needle. I gave up that endeavor and went back to the old fashioned method because #1 the socks were turning out too big #2 I was not liking the results and #3 l do not enjoy knitting with the Addis.

And in case any of you are wondering, on account of the colors in the socks, NO, I am NOT a Red Hat Lady.

A Fine Tale
02.17.05 (12:50 pm) [edit]
Here is what I have been working on the last few days. I set my wheel to the highest ratio I could and decided to spin some "fine stuff." Well I "fine-ally" have a skein done, albeit, it has not been washed to set the twist. This is a combo of Falkland Wool and Llama, as can be seen by the fiber samples in the center of the picture. I think it will end up as a lacy scarf. ( 2- ply -130 yds. -1.2 oz. at about 32 WPI for you spinners out there)

I'm glad to hear I am not alone in having trouble leaving comments. I just didn't want everyone to think I had suddenly gotten "un-neighborly."

Grr... My browser is playing havoc with my commenting on other people's blogs. Those with Blogger Blogs... Well, it is just taking forever for the comment screen to appear. So... Bess, those stat meters aren't really very reliable. Most of my visitors stay zero seconds. So don't let the numbers depress you. I'm not sure how they count time over there in stat land. Amie has provided a fascinating look at her work environment. Thanks for sharing! We're all glad you got that new camera. Donna spent a marvelous weekend celebrating birthdays. Good food is always nice. I surely would like to see her husband's "Moosie." And last, but not least, I cannot even bring up a comment screen to comment on Elayne's posts. I love the mannequin (or girllequin) she found in her bargain shopping. I am blaming Safari for this - yep, why don't I use IE? Cause I don't like the pop ups and Safari can block them.

Who would think a school in a one horse town would have something like this happen? How do I know it is a one horse town? Well, it's my husband's hometown, and the school (now no longer a high school) is the one he graduated from.

Here's my vest. I wore it today, and it is already starting to pill some. I figured I'd better snap a picture while it still looks pretty new.

And here's a picture of the alpaca scarf I'm making.

Gratitude
02.05.05 (8:31 am) [edit]
Thanks to Amie, Donna,Elayne and Lissa, who stopped by to wish Bill and me a speedy recovery. We went to Savannah yesterday for Bill to get his stitches/packing out, and he feels much better. My cold has settled in to a level I can tolerate. Thanks for being patient - if I had posted yesterday, you would have been subjected to a lengthy rant about life in general. Being sick always makes me a little depressed.
We could not tootle around Savannah without making a visit to our friend Jennifer at Wild Fibres! Yes, Donna, I heard that I missed your husband by just a day. I hope his spinning class goes great today. The more spinners he can recruit, the more fiber Jennifer can offer for sale (hee hee!) I bought 2 skeins of luscious turquoise Blue Sky Alpaca and some "purple haze" alpaca/wool blend to spin.
I have finished my vest - it is rather a plain jane, but it was what I wanted. Pictures to come soon.

A Ton of Excuses
02.03.05 (12:12 pm) [edit]
I haven't posted in a few days. Here are my excuses: #1 DH had sinus surgery last week, so I've been kind of busy. If that is not enough, #2 I have a wretched, wretched cold, that is determined to squeeze every bit of energy out of me that it can. Until I got to feeling totally lousy, though, I ALMOST finished a green merino vest for myself. Yesterday, I managed to weave end the loose yarn tails, but I still have one armhole left to put ribbing on.
A very uninspired post, but I did want you to know I am still out here (in some form or another, anyway).
