My First Mini Workshop
07.24.05 (4:22 am) [edit]
This has been a hectic, but very fun week. The first of the week started off with a big trip to Atlanta for orientation for my new job. (Yes, I said NEW - and this one is only part time!) Wednesday was a regular workday. Thursday, the fun really cranked up as Elayne came to spend a couple of days with me for a fiber/dyeing frenzy. We covered all the stuff (or as much as I could remember) from my time at Shakerag.
Here is Elayne happily painting fiber:

A closeup of what she was working on:

She was brave enough to attempt dyeing silk. I have always been afraid of it, but hers turned out great! Here it is drying:

She is going to send me pictures of the other rovings she dyed, so I will keep you posted.
Of course, my fingers were itching the whole time to get some dyeing in, myself. I dyed about 6 oz. of Blue Faced Leicester and a quantity of mohair that Elayne gave me. This is not SOFT mohair. Any good suggestions on how to use it?
BFL:

Mohair:

I used my new Washfast Acid Dyes exclusively for this dyeing, and I am hooked big time. What intense and marvelous colors.
Elayne also gave me instructions for making her wonderful short rowed colorful bag. I can't wait to try it. :)

Here is a little bag made from Lynne Vogel's Shibori Treasure Bag pattern. It is knitted from energized singles. Yarn is from roving dyed and spun by me.

Knitting with energized singles is a little bit different. Sort of like trying to chew meat that is a little bit tough.

Wild Things!!

These socks are so wild, Photobucket didn't even want to upload them. I tried to see how many colors I could possibly use for these. I really like how they turned out - when I have them on my feet, they remind me of a field of wildflowers.

I've Been Busy
07.10.05 (3:47 pm) [edit]
Dyeing, spinning and knitting a pair of crazy socks. I will post a picture when both of the socks are done. Wow, how the summer is flying by! We still have not been back to Orlando to visit Phillip in his new place. His internship is working out great! It is a very exciting time for him and they are keeping him busy with a variety of jobs. We hope to get down there by the end of July.

Acid Rules
07.04.05 (7:27 am) [edit]
Vinegar, that is... See what a difference it made when I sprayed it on my rovings after dyeing with my usual Gaywool Dyes (that are SUPPOSED to already have enough acid, but obviously need that vinegar boost):

Now, that is truly why I took up dyeing in the first place. I am happy to finally see results that meet and exceed my expectations. I cannot wait to spin it up! Well, actually, I cannot wait to dye some more, but I am afraid today is not going to be a dye day. My sweet and industrious Bill has installed a double utility laundry sink in our garage, and I am getting a 4 ft. work center on Wednesday, which will give me room to paint, store dyes and dyestock and to hold a microwave. Yahoo!! Also, he set up an invention I thought of myself. We had hooks in the ceiling of our gargage with chains attached (previously for storing and babying hanging baskets of ferns in the winter - now we just plant them when the season is finished). I got the idea that if we got some PVC pipe and drilled holes in each end and attached s-hooks, I could attach that to the chains and have an instant (and removable, if necessary) drying bar. And... it just happens to already be right over the sink. Now I can dye up a storm!!
Here is my trusted model with another small treasure bag I made with some yarn I spun:

I almost hate to post the way our blog host is messing things up lately, but I just have too much to share.

And A Little Bit of Knitting
07.02.05 (6:00 am) [edit]
Lest you think we only did spinning and dyeing, here is a picture of a little bag I knitted from the yarn I spun. And what is the treasure inside the bag? Well, little left over balls of yarn from knitting the thing. We learned to use small amounts of different yarns to create interesting results. I was fascinated!
