Oh, We Thought We Were Close!!
01.29.06 (4:54 pm) [edit]
|
Last night, I thought we might have a reason to get excited. A lady we know told us there were people down the road a piece from her who raise llamas. We thought "Aha, maybe they will board ours!" So, with high hopes, after church this morning, we drove out to see. Well... we found the place - recognizable, because of the "llamas at play" sign and the big statue of a llama in the fenced enclosure. But, also something we did NOT want to see. A FOR SALE sign - it would be a nice place for the llamas to live, but not a particularly nice place for us to live. The house is rather small and looks like it could use some work. Ah, well...

So, here are my finished socks. My first "toe up" socks. My first socks knitted two at a time. I wore them today. They are pretty comfortable.

Have You Ever Noticed?

Batteries seem to run out at the most inconvenient times... I was sitting here at the computer and decided I needed to take a picture of the finished Queen Kahuna Socks, as well as the start of the next pair. My camera was up here, but of course, my socks were downstairs. I trudged downstairs to get them, and back up to take the pictures. But, my camera had other ideas. The batteries are rechargeable ones, so I guess the next step will be to charge them. Pictures will have to wait.
On the good side, though, tblog has fixed the commenting feature, and now you are given the option to leave your name. Of course, it has been kind of fun trying to match message with messenger.

Scary How True This Is!
01.22.06 (12:02 pm) [edit]
Your Birthdate: November 25
You excel at anything difficult or high tech.
In other words, you're a total (brilliant) geek.
It's difficult for you to find people worth spending time with.
Which is probably why you'll take over the world with your evil robots!
Your strength: Your unfailing logic
Your weakness: Loving machines more than people
Your power color: Tan
Your power symbol: Pi
Your power month: July |
(Except for probably the brilliant part and finding people worth hanging around)

For All You Pod People Out There

Last night, I found a podcast all about Fiber!! Now, I know there are several podcasts out there about knitting, but this one is very heavy on spinning and on fiber animals! Take a listen to Fiber Cast if you get the chance.

Queen Kahuna Rules!
01.19.06 (10:15 am) [edit]
Here are my Queen Kahuna socks in progress! I am loving this new technique. I am just going to have to get a better comfort level with working socks on circular needles, which has never been my favorite method of doing socks. I think that once I get some expensive decent circular rosewood or ebony needles for this, I will be really happy. Queen Kahuna is a genius!! I love the sock so far. Notice, I am saying sock in the singular. The other one "looks" like a sock, but is actuallly the real sock's doppleganger. Suffice it to say, you don't want to drop a stitch where the upper gusset merges into the cuff!
So, this is my first pair of toe up socks and the first worked 2 at a time on 2 circular needles. Once, you may recall, I started 2 on 1 circular needle and made the mistake of posting a picture early on. Alas, that seemed to doom the project, as I got frustrated at some point and ripped them out. Now, with this pair, and only the cuff to knit, I would say I am home free and will soon be "reporting in" to Amie with my first 2 offerings for her 2000 socks in 2006 campaign!!

Deeper and Deeper Into Sock Stuff
01.15.06 (3:52 pm) [edit]
Since Dianna recommended the Queen Kahuna sock book, I just had to rise to the bait. I got my copy in on Friday. I have about 2 inches done on my 2 socks on 2 circulars done. I will keep you posted on how it goes.

Adventures in Spinning!!
01.12.06 (3:36 pm) [edit]
Hi everyone! I am back... at least after a fashion. Thank you to everyone who sent me their kind e-mails about my situation in December. It is so nice to have friends, and I especially treasure my group of fiber ladies! Life is returning to normal, and I had some time on my hands so I took oodles of pictures for your enjoyment.
First off, since I have to show off a bit, here is the latest picture of Phillip and Jessie, taken at their engagement party.

Jessie, Phillip, Jessie's mother and I all wore black. Does that mean something? I think we all just thought we were being elegant.

This is a picture of some yarn I dyed to make Jessie a sock for her new iPod. Sorry it is fuzzy - nope, it's not mohair, it is just out of focus.
Now, on to my cotton pursuits. I wish I had thought to take a picture of the cotton field, but ya know, hindsight is 20-20. Here is the cotton in its original state:

After many nights in front of the TV, picking out seeds and trash, I came up with this. (Actually, the seeds freed themselves fairly easily, but it was still time consuming).

Now came the really fun parts... Carding:

Making the punis:

Spinning the cotton:
Especially easy on my new Bosworth Book Charkha!
And TADA, the finished product:

The skeins are "before boiling" and the ball is "after boiling". I don't have a knitted swatch. I did have a knitted swatch, but I gave it to the people at the motel who own the cotton field.
And, excitement of excitement!! My sock class starts tomorrow at Fuzzy Mabel!! I will be teaching for 3 Fridays in a row. I have 3 "for sure" students and may gather some more. Wish me luck! Teaching knitting and spinning and dyeing is something I have been wanting to do for a long while.
Oh, and I would LOVE it if you would add yourself to my Frappr Map at the right!!'
