One Colorway... Three Ways
05.29.06 (6:52 pm)   [edit]
Okay, you might think I'm stuck in a rut here. But, actually, I love this colorway and find it to give predictable and pleasing results. So... number one was done on Knit Picks yarn, and this is a Faroese Shawlette I knit from it.

Then, here we have the back of the same shawl...

Next, comes my very first try at dyeing self striping sock yarn. Unfortunately, this was just a sample, so there is not actually enough to knit even a whole sock... Same colorway, different application.

It really is the same, but the picture was taken in artificial light. Number three usage of the colorway will not be posted. This was done on 5 oz. of Finn wool and will be a "participant" in the hand dyed roving swap we will have at the Lynne Vogel workshop reunion retreat at the end of June. And, I have a sneaking suspicion which lady might really want to get this roving in a swap. Only time will tell, though.

I have a VERY good idea about who would be proud to get that colorway. (giggle)

Oh, my gosh! I love it, Carolyn. I'm a sucker for bright colors.

Awesome and bright, just like you.
Can't wait to get the details.

Carolyn, I found an interesting technique for dyeing the self striping yarns without winding longer skeins. I knit yarn in flat pieces using an an inexpensive knitting machine. Then I dye the flat pieces in stripes. I can place two panels (skeins) side by side on the work table and accurately dye them to match so I get two skeins of sock yarn that match when knitted. The knitted panels are so much easier to manipulate and dye than longer skeins. Although this method adds the extra step of unraveling and blocking the yarn after the dyeing, I think it's certainly worth the trouble. I've done this method with the Knitpicks fingering weight merino and worsted weight yarns. You can also knit up panels and use them for blotting or cleanup when dyeing roving or other fiber to make sure that very little dye is ever wasted. Sometimes my paper towels that I've used for blotting have turned out more interesting than the actual dyed fiber. I've been using this dyeing method for making striped or graded color weft for weaving projects. - Donald (Yarn-o-holics husband)

Donald,

That is SO cool!!! Of course I am not sure I could manage playing with a knitting machine... I tried that a long time ago and couldn't get past the instructions. You should write a book about it (or at the very least submit an article to Spin Off or something!!)
Good to hear from you :)

pretty! esp. love the socks.

so I took that southerner test and got 80%- which put me at over 99% for my age and gender. :-o my oh my! The fact that I grew up in the south is still amazingly obvious, I suppose! ;-)
